PUBLIC HIKES AT
THE UCSB SEDGWICK RESERVE
SATURDAY AFTERNOON FEBRUARY 11, 2017
The beautiful and rugged Santa Ynez Valley is the setting for a series of monthly interpretive hikes and nature activities open to the public each fall and spring on the 6,000-acre UCSB Sedgwick Reserve.
The next hikes in the series will be held at 2 PM on Saturday, February 11. Three hikes with varying themes such as geology, landforms, Sedgwick panoramas, plants and animals or birds will be conducted, with hiking levels of Easy, Moderate or Moderate Plus.
These interpretive hikes are approximately two to three hours each and are followed by the opportunity to picnic with your own dinner at the Reserve. In addition to the hikes, other activities such as: a tour of the newly-renovated one hundred year old barn, the Los Cumbres observatory; the bird-attracting pond; and the new Tipton House and are available for those who don’t want to hike and would like to enjoy the Reserve attractions while the hikes are being conducted. We encourage hikers to stay after the hikes for a picnic dinner (BYO), the evening murmuration at the pond (approximately 5:30), and then at 7:00 PM attend a public lecture about oak research at Sedgwick hosted by SYV Natural History Society & Sedgwick. A description of the lecture can be found at http://www.syvnature.org/.
Sedgwick operates on a very limited University budget; therefore a donation of $10 per hiker or $15 per couple or family is suggested for the hikes. Donations can be made on the day of the hike, and reservations are required. Also, be advised that if there is inclement weather, the hikes will be cancelled and a message will be placed on the Sedgwick answering machine (805-686-1941).
For further information and reservations, contact sedgwick@lifesci.ucsb.edu. Please be prepared to indicate which level of hike you prefer.
