In 1969, the devastating images of a massive oil spill from an oil platform off Santa Barbara’s coast galvanized California into action and caught the attention of the rest of the nation, including Senator Gaylord Nelson, founder of Earth Day, who visited Santa Barbara shortly after the spill. The resulting swell of concern gave rise to the first Earth Day in 1970, as well as to the creation of the Community Environmental Council (CEC), the host of Santa Barbara’s annual Earth Day Festival.
The Community Environmental Council will host the 2014 Santa Barbara Earth Day Festival at Alameda Park on Saturday, April 26 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday, April 27 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The event includes over 200 exhibitors, a food court, beer and wine garden, main stage, and two mini-stages offering music and demonstrations.
